Big, Bright and Beautiful
What’s the story?
As part of my glass upgrade, I’ve recently acquired a Canon 70-200 2.8L IS USM lens. I’d thought about it for a long time and definitely don’t regret my decision to make the purchase.
Although it is by far the biggest and heaviest lens that I own, it is beautifully engineered. The brightness through the viewfinder is staggering, the focus very quick and accurate and it’s a pleasure to hold and take photographs with.
Here are a couple on shots that I grabbed today. Just take a look at the sharpness and notice how shallow the depth of field is on Roxy (the dog’s) eyes.
Llansantfraed Court
I’m really looking forward to the wedding of Naomi and Iwan on the 8th May. They are a lovely couple and they’ve chosen a fantastic venue for their reception, Llansantfraed Court, just outside Abergavenny in Monmouthshire.
I called by the other day to take a good look and to work out some of the potential photo vantage points. The building is just magnificent and the surrounding grounds looked beautiful and I thought it would be worth publishing a few images here…
Steel Wave, Newport
‘Steel wave’ is a sculpture by Peter Fink. Comissioned in 1990 as a tribute to the Newport Steelworkers and Seafarers.
The sculpture stands proud on the North bank of the river Usk in Newport city centre.
The building in the background is the current home of Newport market where you’ll find some of the best fruit & veg mechants and butchers in South East Wales
Back in the Studio
I had the opportunity to photograph this beautiful woman (also my wife) this weekend as she needed a new set of PR shots for some forthcoming media work. This is one of my favourites.
Although challenging, studio work gives you so much control over all the lighting and enables you to produce repeatable results no matter what the weather, which has to be a bonus in the UK.
Ty Merlin
Ty Merlin is the landmark building of DEFRA (Welsh Assembly Government Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs).
I was commissioned back in December to take a series of pictures for an annual report. It had rained solidly for nearly two months, there was a single day like this and then it rained for another month!
